About the method that a foreign student participates in
an internship programin Japan

  • What is the internship?

When we think about internship, the description about "Work experience“ in Wikipedia of
the U.K." serves as a reference.
“ ・・・・Work experience is any experience that a person gains while working in a specific
field or occupation, but the expression is widely used to mean a type of volunteer work
that is commonly intended for young people — often students — to get a feel for
professional working environments. The American equivalent term is internship.
Though the placements are usually unpaid, travel and food expenses are sometimes
covered, and at the end of the appointment, a character reference is usually provided.
Trainees usually have the opportunity to network and make contacts among the working
personnel, and put themselves forward for forthcoming opportunities for paid work.
Many employers in the more sought after professions (e.g. TV, politics, journalism)
demand that every new entrant undergo a period of unpaid "work experience" before
being able to get paid work. ・・・・” (from wikipedia)

  • The system of the internship in Japan

The operation of the internship system by the Japanese Government began after The
promotion of the spread of the action plan for a change and creation of the economic
structure has been approved in a Cabinet meeting to May 16 in 1997.
On September 18, the same year the Ministry of Education (existing Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), the Ministry of International Trade and Industry
(existing Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and the Department of Labor (existing
Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) formulated "a basic way of thinking on promoting
the internship" jointly and started the maintenance of systems concerned.
Thus the system of the internship has spread gradually, and then they reported that the
student of estimated 120 000 utilized the the system in 2005.
